      The Day Fractions Became Friends

In a lively Primary Six classroom, Teacher Mutdang, the Mathematics teacher, faced a challenge. My pupils feared fractions like they were monsters. Each time I wrote on the board, the class became silent as if a ghost had entered the room.

One Monday morning, I decided to try something new—CHUNKING.

I entered the class with a basket of oranges and smiled.
“Today,” we will make fractions our friends, but only if we eat them in chunks.”

      The pupils laughed.

First, I chunked the lesson into the smallest piece:

      1. I cut one orange into two equal halves and asked,
      “What fraction is this?”
The class shouted, “One Out of two!”

      2. I then cut another orange into four equal parts and asked,
      “What fraction is each piece?”
The class replied, “One out of four!”

The first chunk of the lesson—Understanding denominators—was completed.

Next, I gave each group of pupils a set of orange slices and asked them to compare fractions.

Group A: “Half is bigger than one-quarter!”

Group B: “Two quarters is the same as a half!”

      The second chunk—Comparing fractions—was successful.

Finally, I guided them to add fractions by physically joining slices.
Two slices became a half, and three plus one became a whole orange.
      Cheers filled the room!

By the end of the lesson, fractions were no longer scary. Each small chunk of learning made the bigger picture clear. Even Precious, the quietest girl in class, raised her hand and said,
“Sir, I can teach this to my brother at home now!”

I smiled because I had not just taught fractions— but I had built confidence in every learner using chunks.
